Hauwa Otori is a Senior Policy Communications Manager at GitHub, the largest software development platform in the world, with a community of 25 million users. Hauwa is passionate about educating people about the Internet, policies that drive technology, and their impact on people.
Hauwa has extensive experience in Internet policy and communicating those complex debates to audiences. She was previously a Program Fellow at the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation where she supported strategic-thinking and grant-making for the five-year, $65 million Cyber Initiative. She has also served as the Director of Legal & Regulatory Policy at the Internet Association, a trade association representing leading global Internet companies, where she oversaw its broad Internet policy portfolio. Hauwa previously founded the Virtual Skinny, an online Internet platform focused on making tech industry developments digestible, conversational, and fun for a broad audience.
She is the author of Children and the Media: Self-Other Perceptions of Occupational Portrayals in the Media, and her work has also appeared in leading online outlets such as Forbes. Hauwa earned her undergraduate degree in Communication with a minor in Applied Economics & Management from Cornell University where she conducted and published media psychology research. Hauwa holds a J.D. from American University Washington College of Law and is a member of the New York State Bar.
